How does off-plan cost work? (and why it isn’t just your losing trades)
Your off-plan cost says one thing, but the trade that broke your rules lost something else, and the numbers don’t seem to add up. Nothing is wrong with your data. Off-plan cost is a net result, and each trade is counted once.
Why it happens
- Off-plan cost is what the trades that broke at least one of your active rules netted, added together. Each trade counts once, however many rules it broke.
- It is a net result, not a count of losses. A trade that broke a rule but won reduces the cost. The app words it the same way: “What trades that broke a rule netted. Not money you would have made.”
- Adherence and the Off-plan trades tile count trades, not rules. A trade that broke two rules is still one off-plan trade.
- Trial rules are left out of all of these.
An example
Illustrative numbers, before fees. Your plan has two rules: “Stop loss on every trade” and “No trading before 9:45”.

What Plan Builder shows:
- Off-plan cost: -$180.00. Trade 1 counts once (-$300) plus trade 2 (+$120). The panel reads “$180.00 left on the table”.
- Off-plan trades: 2 / 3 and Adherence: 33.33%, because one trade in three followed the plan.
- The trade list shows one row per trade, and trade 1’s row names both rules it broke.
The surprises: adding only the losses gives -$300, because trade 2 won and still counts. Counting once per rule broken would give three breaches from two trades, and that is not how adherence works.
How to read it
- To see what your rule-breaking trades netted, read the Off-plan cost tile.
- To see which trades made it up, open the list under “Where your -$180.00 went”: one row per trade with the rule or rules it broke.
