Why Your Cumulative Return Doesn’t Match the Trades Section: Understanding the Differences
It’s important to understand that the trades table is not affected by trade settings such as Gross/Net, R Multiple, Close Date, Open Date, or Transaction Date. The trades table is intended to serve as a log of all your trades, whereas the widgets and reports are influenced by these settings. For instance, if you choose not to include open trades’ PnL in your reports, it doesn’t mean that open trades will be hidden from the trades table—they will still be visible because hiding them would be illogical.
Below are some scenarios where the PnL shown on the trades table might not match the PnL in the reports.
Net vs. Gross vs. R Multiple Reports
If your trade settings are configured to report PnL based on “Close Date” or “Open Date,” ensure that you are comparing widgets that report Net Results against the trades column labeled “Return Net.” To compare Gross results, refer to the column labeled “Return” under the trades table, which reports the total return of the trade in gross.
Transaction Date
If you’ve chosen to report based on Transaction Date and have trades with partial realized gains on different dates, the PnL in the trades column may not match the widgets. This is because the trades table is designed to report the total PnL of the trades, while the widgets are more granular and reflect the settings you’ve chosen.
This discrepancy is intentional. As traders, when viewing a trade from a high-level perspective, we typically want to know the overall profit or loss from the trade, not the PnL for a specific date/trade. To see how much was made on a trade for a particular date, simply click on the trade to view partial returns.
Excluding Open Trades from Reports
Under trade settings, you can opt to exclude partial realized PnL on open trades from reports. This means the system will not factor in any PnL from open trades when calculating your total PnL. However, this does not mean that the trades table will hide the trade. The trades table will still display the open trade and its associated PnL, but the widgets and reports will not include it. This behavior is intentional.
